USMCA discussions continue during August recess

House Democrats continued to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and his team during the August Congressional recess to discuss concerns about certain aspects of the United States ‒ Mexico ‒ Canada Agreement (USMCA). Specifically, they want to ensure Mexico’s adherence to stricter labor and environmental standards included in the Agreement.

In late July, more than 600 business and agriculture groups representing nearly every sector of the economy, including NAFEM, sent a letter to Congress advocating for passage of the USMCA. Mexico’s Senate has ratified the USMCA; Canada has begun the formal process to consider the Agreement. Politico recently summarized the position of the Democratic presidential candidates on the USMCA.
