Driving understanding of pending certification requirement changes

In just over two years, all commercial refrigeration equipment currently certified to UL 412, 427, 471 and CSA 22.2 No. 120 will transition to certification under UL 60335-2-89. UL’s Standards Technical Panel (STP) determined that existing products with no changes will not require recertification. New and revised products must be investigated before the Sept. 29, 2022 deadline. According to Randy Haseman, UL’s principal engineer, refrigeration and room air, “ice makers will be added to the certification, but with a different transition date.”

According to Lauren MacGowens, lead regulatory advisor, refrigeration technology at the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), the organization is working closely with UL, CSA Group and Intertek to harmonize transition dates. AHRI also is working to clarify which product changes require recertification. “For example, we’re hoping that minor changes, like those to plastic components or a connector change, will allow companies to maintain their current certifications.”

NAFEM recently held a webinar with UL and AHRI to raise awareness of these pending changes.
