Plastic straw bans gain momentum

San Francisco has joined numerous other California communities in banning plastic drinking straws to eliminate litter and protect the environment. The new rule takes effect in San Francisco on Jan. 1, 2020. Meanwhile, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz all have passed straw bans. Some communities also have banned plastic bottles, cups and cutlery, preferring biodegradable alternatives.

Businesses are following suit. Marriott and Hilton have announced plans to remove plastic straws and drink stirrers from hotels. American Airlines is planning to do the same, and Starbucks recently announced plans to remove plastic straws from all stores globally by 2020.
