CRE and WIC/F energy-efficiency rules nullified by presidential signature
President Trump signed resolutions nullifying energy-efficiency rules for Commercial Refrigeration Equipment (H.J. 75) and Walk-in Coolers and Freezers (H.J. 24) under the Congressional Review Act (CRA), which treats the rules as if they never existed. Doing so opens the door for industry to reengage with the Department of Energy (DOE) to build a better foundation for future energy-efficiency standards. Thanks to the many members who reached out to their elected officials via the NAFEM Advocacy Action Center or directly encouraged passage of the resolutions.
Energy conservation standards for Automatic Commercial Ice Makers rescinded
DOE issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to rescind the amended water use standards for automatic commercial ice makers (ACIMs). The proposal will return the standards to the statutory baseline. Additionally, the Secretary has tentatively determined that DOE lacks authority to regulate the water use of ACIMs. DOE will hold a public meeting webinar to discuss the NOPR Thursday, May 29, from 1 – 4 p.m. Eastern. To participate, notify the DOE Appliance and Equipment Standards staff by phone (+1.202.287.1445) or email. Comments are due July 15. NAFEM will continue to work with members and the DOE on this issue.
Comments on DOE Process Rule RFI due June 2
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking feedback on the energy-conservation standards rulemaking process for commercial equipment. The process rule addresses procedures, interpretations and policies for considering new or revised standards. Per the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, DOE is required to revisit the Process Rule every six years. NAFEM has held calls to discuss industry comments and will circulate draft comments for review in advance of the June 2 deadline. Feel free to contact the Advocacy team at advocacy@nafem.org with questions.
California considering efficiency standards for commercial fryers
The California Energy Commission (CEC) issued a Request for Information (RFI) on potential energy efficiency standards for commercial propane fryers and to assess their prevalence and performance in the commercial food service industry. Comments are due by June 23.
